Hello Gorgeous!
I’m Nneka and it’s my life’s purpose to inspire others.
Do you wish your work-life ambitions were more in alignment with your personal-life passions and beliefs? Are you a Creative working a job for the paycheck, while treating your God-given talent as a mere hobby? Have people in your life ever told you that you can’t make money doing what you love?
Well, I’ve been there, too!
As an author, motivational speaker, spoken word artist and longtime publicist, I am also a big-picture vision consultant.
I began my career in my very early 20s. After being asked to take a personality test at the end of a marketing internship, the boss asked me to stay onboard as their in-house publicist. At that point, I attempted to climb the Corporate Ladder. I had much success, which took me to Hollywood. I worked at a few offices in Beverly Hills where I frequented movie sets, red carpet events, benefit galas, celebrity parties and more. At one point, I lived walking distance from the Pacific Ocean, and that was the best part of it all.
Don’t get me wrong, there were many perks and fun experiences: the glitz and glamour of donning gowns and walking the red carpet, mixing and mingling with celebrities you’ve only idolized from afar, like sharing words with Beyoncé, meeting Oprah Winfrey face-to-face and escorting Brian McKnight down the red carpet as Jamie Foxx stood only feet away and together, they sang an impromptu duet, to name but a few of my encounters. However, something was missing for me, personally.
I felt like a hypocrite, supporting the superficial aspects of mainstream media that weren’t fueling my passions nor aligning with my deep-rooted beliefs. I didn’t feel I was positively contributing to the betterment of the world, as I was actually helping to perpetuate detrimental stereotypes and unnatural ideals of beauty onto the public. So eventually, I walked away from the Entertainment Industry.
I found more solace in other aspects of the Arts, including the world of design and representing soulful indie artists. However, as I continued seeking the American Dream—you know, the harder you work the more you’ll gain—well, the more I seemed to put into my career, the more turmoil would arise at home, so something still wasn’t right. I needed to change the game!
Let’s keep it real.
I'm hard-headed and stubborn and I will own this! I was very well conditioned in the idea that working for others was the only way to seek a stable and prosperous life for myself and my family. Yet I realized that I had been spending too much time hiding behind my career of pushing other people into the spotlight and helping them to acquire success. I’ve made other people hundreds, thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars, while only seeing a small return on my investment of giving my time, knowledge, skills, intellectual wherewithal, ideas, advice, creativity, etc., and so on.
I love coaching talented people on how to turn their passions into careers, but I realized while in doing so, I was keeping my own writing, poetry, acting and all my creative works locked up and hidden away. This realization has taught me a lot, as I, myself, need to heed the wisdom I give to my clients and honor my creative works as the gifts that they are. I have now challenged myself to share them with the world.
There’s no one stopping you, but YOU!
I truly believe that you absolutely CAN do exactly what you love and live a prosperous life. In fact, I believe that the sooner you start taking yourself and your innate talents more seriously and begin sharing your passions with the world, or at least honoring them as the gifts they are, the happier you will become in all the areas of your life. You will also begin to evoke that joy onto the people you love and others around you.
In creating Black Lace + Pearls magazine, it was my mission to develop a platform to showcase my creative works while merging my skills as a publicist to not only highlight myself as an artist, but to continue to promote and celebrate other impactful people around the globe doing amazing things in the world.
BLP magazine is one of my tools I use as a resource for creative entrepreneurs. It is also my way of countering negative and ill-fitting images within the media as I “Aspire to Inspire” women around the world to live out their desires and turn their dreams into reality.
Now, you've heard my story...
I would like to hear yours too! Feel free to send me an email and share what's been holding you back from pursuing your dreams. Or, how you've been putting action behind those desires to propel them forward...I love a great success story!
